Emma Baker’s husband, Jonathan, has just divorced her, shattered her heart and left her and her young son, Christopher, to fend for themselves. Bitterly lonely, she accepts a girlfriend’s suggestion to go out on her first night as a newly free woman. She vows not to let a man turn her head, vows not to let love make a fool of her again. But she never counted on meeting a charismatic and sexy bouncer like Ben Lauery, who takes her for an exciting ride on his Harley, sweeps her off her feet and steals her heart. Emma’s been going through a rough time. Her husband left her for another woman and now she’s a divorced single mom. On the advice of a friend, she heads to a bar one evening where she meets Ben, an ex-Marine.
The story is told in the first person which allows you to connect with Emma immediately. She’s a sympathetic character and the author doesn’t over play Emma wallowing in self pity as the scorned woman. She’s getting on with her life and making a new start. So when she meets Ben and is told he hits on all the women in the bar, you begin to worry about her being hurt again. However, you get to see Ben through Emma’s eyes and you realize he’s a nice, honest guy who’s been hurt himself.
I have to admit when I checked the blurb for this story I was hesitant to read and review it because I thought, oh no, yet another single woman in a bar story. It will probably be all sex scenes with no plot whatsoever. I’m glad my instinct won out because I really enjoyed reading this one.
Ms. Summers does a wonderful job of developing the relationship between these two people which, I should add, isn’t always an easy task in just forty-five pages. The ending, which I didn’t see coming, put a smile on my face.
If you’re looking for a quick sexy and yes, romantic read, I highly recommend this one. ****

takes her for an exciting ride on his Harley, sweeps her off

After a divorce, how do you find love?
Emma Baker’s husband told her he didn’t love her any
more. She suddenly found herself a divorced, solo parent
with a seven year old son. Relieved to find a job, Emma
agrees to go out and celebrate with her girlfriend.
At first she stands alone. Ben, the club bouncer, shows
he’s interested in her, and Jason, a club patron, asks her
to dance. She decides her dance partner is egotistical, but
she is very attracted to Ben.
Emma’s inner thoughts come through very clearly. Her
turmoil and disbelief when her husband walked out of a
supposedly happy marriage. Her anxiety and lack of
confidence in getting back on the dating scene. Beautifully
written, showing a jilted woman’s emotions.
We only see things from Emma’s perspective as this is
written in the first person. Despite her friend’s warnings
about Ben, Emma has fallen for him and agrees to another
date.
The second date is where I found it a bit difficult to come
to grips with Emma’s reality. Her lack of confidence has
disappeared and she plans the direction of the second date.
She encourages Ben to move to the next step with barely a
moment’s hesitation. A little too quick a turnaround in
emotions for me. Another problem I had was with Ben. He had
told Emma of his past and how he needed to learn the truth.
This need was not resolved by the end of the story.
Despite the speed of events, I liked this book. Emma and Ben
obviously had some sort of connection from the time they set
eyes on each other. Their love making was hot, but the
question of whether is was love or lust was the important
question that had to be answered. Not only by Emma but also
by Ben. On the whole a good book. Ideal read for when you
have a few moments to spare.

Emma Baker survived her divorce from a man who left her for another woman, but the scars it created are deep and emotionally crippling. She doesn’t believe in love anymore. With her mistrust of men on high alert, she goes out for the first time with her friends to enjoy a night of dancing and then she meets Ben. Even though she feels an immediate attraction to him, can she truly believe his smooth talking words?
Kathryn Meyer Griffith surprised me with Always and Forever. I have enjoyed her horror stories for some time, but Always and Forever is an exquisite story about the pain of love and hope rekindled. Ms. Griffith has ventured away from her usual mainstream writing to enchant us with a sensual story about a woman boldly daring to find her dream.

REVIEW for Always & Forever from THE ROMANCE STUDIO:
Always and Forever
Kathryn Meyer Griffith
Contemporary romance
Available from Whispers Publishing
January 2011
Four days after the papers are signed on a surprise divorce, Emma is feeling abandoned and alone. She is worried about supporting herself and her son and has taken a lousy job. Her friend Jacki talks her into an evening of fun, going out for some music and dancing. While Jacki is dancing, Emma takes a trip to the restroom to sulk. On her way back, she runs into someone who may make the evening much more interesting. And it’s there the story begins.
Things move very quickly through the course of Always and Forever. There is instant attraction and steamy sex. There is a fun ‘first time on a motorcycle’ scene. Emma makes some definite steps forward in taking control of her life, which I really enjoyed. The ending of this story is strong and I enjoyed it more than the standard ‘happily ever after’.
One of the challenges or writing a short piece of fiction is fleshing out characters in a limited number of words. Ms. Griffith does an okay job with the two main characters, but the son feels like a prop – something to take out to make a point but not really developed. Overall this is a quick read for times when you’re not looking for anything too deep.

Emma Baker is taken out by a girlfriend to celebrate her first night as a newly-divorced woman. After 10 years of marriage, Jonathan, Emma’s husband, had sprung on her the fact that he was in love with another woman and walked out on her and her son Christopher. Emma swore to herself that she would let no man turn her head at the bar; until she met the bouncer, Ben.
Their attraction for each other was immediate but they agree to take it slow. Is this desire a flash that will burn out fast, or is it always and forever?
I thought this was an interesting departure for Kathryn Meyer Griffith as she is usually a romantic horror author. This was a contemporary romance with no horror elements at all. I give this short story an A!
